💬 Sheppertonian Seven
Getting to know the people of Shepperton, seven questions at a time.
This week: Andy Anderson, founder of the Shepperton Patient Cancer Support Group.

Who are you and what is your connection to Shepperton?
I'm Andy and I moved to Shepperton in 2017, and I still consider it as a great move. I founded The Patient Cancer Support Group in 2018 as a result of my own cancer journey that started back in January 2014. This is a peer support group with meetings held at Shepperton Medical Practice but we also quite have professional speakers. A cancer journey is tough but supporting each other and listening to others experiences helps people move forward ensuring we are not alone in our struggles.
How did you end up in the area?
Life sometimes doesn't go according to plan but hey, that's life and no regrets…and when I got divorced I chose Shepperton as my next destination having lived in Staines for over 30 years. I knew the area very well from working at Spelthorne. It is a peaceful and pretty village and also I have a few friends living here. I'm thoroughly enjoying my retirement and I love my home too.
What's the best thing about living or working here?
I embrace most of the things going on in Shepperton as a result of running the Charity and I'm involved with a few community groups too, which is amazing. The people are friendly and greet you with a nice smile but naturally it is a two-way thing! I know everyone living in my street and that creates a friendly and caring community for me. Great green areas around us and the river for me is the icing on the cake particularly at Shepperton lock. I lived close to the river in Staines and Shepperton had to be my next move.
Tell us something about yourself we wouldn't guess from meeting you.
In the 80s/90s I must have been the most hated person in Spelthorne, well, at least by a certain section of the residents! I was involved in more than 6000 court cases and unfortunately 3 went to prison! It was a tough job but someone had to do it...what a nasty person I was.....and people still talk to me?
Your favourite spot in Shepperton, and why?
I have to walk daily for at least 45 minutes in view of my situation and along the river from the lock to Chertsey it is so beautiful, serene and watching the boats go by. I have to be honest, though and say as I live closer to Walton Bridge, the tow path to Weybridge is my favourite walk - although it's not exactly Shepperton - but neighbouring with only the river to separate them.
Best-kept local secret, a place, a walk, or a dish?
All these years here and I only discovered the walk from the side of the Three Horseshoes pub at the High Street to Sheep Walk (I think), earlier in the year. Also the walk around the Halliford Mere Lake is quite nice too.
"For me, Shepperton is..."
…a great place to live that makes me happy, content and above all blessed to be here.
