Hello Sheppertonian 👋

Welcome to The Sheppertonian Weekly.

🎧 New on the podcast, Maureen Attewell and Sinéad Mooney: your West Surrey councillors
On 1st April, the councils that run Shepperton hand over to West Surrey. Your two councillors on the new authority talk about what the job really involves, what they’ll fight to protect, and the day in 2014 an army officer knocked on Maureen’s door and told her to pack a bag.

🏅 Sport

Sheppertonians FC 2 - Dunsfold Reserves 0. Captain Joe Irwin scored both goals on Saturday, following his hat trick the week before. Manager Chris Nisbet calls him “our very own Sheppertonian local, leading our new team”. The win keeps them unbeaten and third in the Youth to Adult Transition Division. Next up: at home to Beacon Hill Under 23’s, Saturday 7th November, 2pm.

Goldfingers Reserves 2 - Shepperton Pumas 2. The Pumas fought back from two goals down to draw away on Saturday. After a difficult first half they trailed 2-0 at the break, before Alex Hall pulled one back and Nath Williams struck a last-minute equaliser. The point keeps them unbeaten in the league ahead of Saturday's top-of-the-table clash with Earlsfield.

🎧 On the podcast

On 1st April, Spelthorne Borough Council and Surrey County Council hand over to the new West Surrey Council. So I sat down with Maureen Attewell and Sinéad Mooney, the two councillors elected to represent Laleham and Shepperton on it. For now, Maureen sits on all three councils at once. Sinéad is Deputy Leader of Surrey County Council, and chairs the committee scrutinising the new one.

We talked about what the job actually involves, from the angry calls about overnight roadworks to the one about a food bank. We also talked about what made them stand in the first place, and why both of them are ready to fight for the Greeno Centre. Along the way there’s the Sunbury Golf Club application, the River Thames Scheme, the High Street, and the debt West Surrey inherits. Plus the story behind the poppies on the High Street this week.

Want to contact them, or anyone else who represents you? It’s all on our Your Local Representatives page.
